The Seward County Board of Commissioners discussed updating its employee handbook and was presented a resignation from Veteran Service Officer/Public Transit director Jeff Baker during its Dec. 1 meeting.

The board held a discussion to contract human resources director Brea Ehmen to complete an update of the Seward County employee manual. Legal advisor Barb Armstead said she would like to take a closer look at wording of the contract before it is approved. Therefore, no action was taken.

Baker presented a written resignation during the latter half of the meeting, as he has accepted a job from the state Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lincoln.

“It has been a joy to work with you all and to do my job as well as I can,” he said.

Acceptance of his resignation was added to the Dec. 8 agenda.

Also during the meeting, the board:

• heard from county officials regarding monthly department updates. Those present were Ann Dobesh of the Nebraska Extension, Jonathan Jank of Seward County Chamber and Development Partnership, county clerk Sherry Schweitzer and emergency services director Andrew Matney.

• adopted a resolution to approve the creation of a short-form plat addition brought forward by Mark Petri to add acreage to his house from his farmland.

• heard from Matney about an invoice issue with Motorola Services. He said there has been no success in contacting anyone for record of payment and requested the county attorney’s help in receiving further communication.

• approved a surplus of $20,000 from Highway Superintendent Terry Wicht after he sold a dump truck. The money will be added to his special road fund to be used when applicable.

• heard from Gary Petersen, the York/Seward Emergency Services manager, about signing a Nixle/Everbridge, an emergency alert notification system, quote. It was signed by board members and the cost share will be split between York and Seward counties.

• heard from Baker on updates for both county public transit and veteran affairs.

The next Seward County Board of Commissioners meeting will be Dec. 15 at 9 a.m. on the third floor of the courthouse. The meetings are open to the public.
