The Centennial and Milford girls’ track teams were the top two in the team standings at the end of the Wilber-Clatonia Invitational March 30.

The Broncos won the meet with 124 points, while Milford scored 89, edging Tri County by one.

CHS Coach Rob Johansen said cold and windy conditions kept the Broncos from setting personal bests.

“It was a good solid meet from our girls team. The boys were missing a couple of key performers or they would have come in second,” he said.

MHS Coach Marty Hingst was pleased with how the Eagles did.

“The girls were second overall. I’m very proud of that,” he said. “Sometimes the first outdoor meet is tough on athletes. That happened to us.”

For the Broncos, Daylee Dey ran to first in the 1,600-meter run in 6:01.46 and was third in the 800 (2:40.72). Kate Hirschfeld won the triple jump with a jump of 32-10.75 and placed third in the 300-meter hurdles (54.78 seconds). Jillian Bailey won the long jump at 15-1 and anchored the first-place 4x100-meter relay.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Savannah Horne, Molly Prochaska, Hirschfeld and Dey won the event in 4:29.26.

Horne also placed third in the 200-meter dash in 28.38 seconds.

Kailey Ziegler won the discus with a throw of 99-4 and was third in the shot put with a 31-10.25 effort.

Milford’s Sydney Stelling finished second in the 100-meter dash in 13.27 seconds. She was also second in the 200 with a time of 27.9 seconds.

Makena Stutzman also ran well in her first meet of the season, Hingst said. The senior finished tied for fourth in the 100.

Caitlyn Adams placed second in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.69 and sixth in the 800-meter run (2:51.93). Abbie McGuire earned second in the 1,600-meter run (6:05.43) with a faster time than her indoor run, and Mavis Hansen led the Eagles with a silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles (18.09 seconds).

The MHS 4x100-meter relay team of Stutzman, Sarah Spahr, Macy Stutzman and Paige Riley sprinted to second behind Centennial’s team of Bailey, Hirschfeld, Savannah Horne and Molly Prochaska. Their times were 45.88 and 55.89 seconds.

“They will be a nice outfit,” Hingst said of the Eagle crew.

Milford’s 4x800-meter relay team earned second with members Kaitlyn Kontor, Eliza McGuire, Alayna Piening and Abbie McGuire. Their time was 11:26.94.

Spahr picked up second place in the high jump at 5-0, and Camille Stauffer earned second in the discus with a throw of 98-9.

In the boys’ competition, Centennial’s top finisher was Carson Fehlhafer in the discus. The CHS junior won the event with a throw of 137-9.

Jake Bargen jumped to second in the high jump at 6-0, and Sam Tomes cleared 11-6 to finish second in the pole vault. Teammate Cooper Gierhan was third at 11-0.

Jayden Hartshorn picked up second in the shot put with a throw of 41-0.75 and third in the discus at 118-7. Milford’s Isaac Voboril placed fourth in the shot put at 39-2.5.

Ryan Payne completed the 3,200-meter run in 10:55.53 for second place.

Collin Piening led the Eagles with a gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.97 seconds. He was second in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.49 seconds.

The Eagles’ 4x800-meter relay team of Maddox Baack, Hudson Mullet, Elliott Reitz and Carter Roth placed second in 9:29.6.

Dane Kolb earned third for the Eagles in the long jump at 18-10.

Hingst said some of the athletes were complaining about dry throats and said the low dew point contributed to that.

Both teams are scheduled to compete at the Malcolm Invitational Wednesday, April 7.
