Broncos win battle for bragging rights

It’s been awhile since Milford and Centennial have battled on the football field.

The Broncos and Eagles picked up where they left off, fighting to the very end of the game before Centennial prevailed 16-12.

Milford led 12-3 at halftime and maintained the lead through the third quarter and into the fourth.

CHS Coach Evan Klanecky said the Broncos were able to force the Eagles into a three-and-out on the 35 with about 3:30 to play.

Centennial drove the field and on the 5 yard line, Jarrett Dodson fumbled the ball. Jayde Gumaer recovered it on the 3 for CHS.

Then the question arose, “should we kick a field goal?” Klanecky said. “It’s a zero to hero call.”

He chose to let quarterback Maj Nisly carry one more time, and the senior found the endzone as time expired for the CHS win.

Nisly finished the game with 130 yards rushing on 20 carries and scored once. He also threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Levi Zimmer in the fourth quarter.

Tyce Lopez led the Eagles with 69 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown in the second quarter. Hunter Oborny added 59 yards on 16 attempts.

Cayden Nelson carried twice for 75 yards and a touchdown for MHS.

On defense, Conner Kohout led Milford with four solo tackles and nine assists. Chase Nitzsche added three solo stops and eight assists.

For Centennial, Breckin Schoepf recorded six solo tackles and three assists. Gumaer added four solos and four assists.

Klanecky said the Broncos made a lot of mistake they need to fix in the coming week of practice. He said the team cleaned up penalties in the second half, but there were assignment errors and missed reads that have to be corrected.

Klanecky said receivers Alex Hirschfeld and Levi Zimmer had good games, and Dodson ran the ball well. Schoepf has done a nice job on kick and punt returns, giving the Broncos good field position.

This week’s scout team player of the week for Centennial is Traetyn Stewart.

The Broncos (3-2) will be at Lincoln Lutheran (3-2) Friday, Sept. 30. The game will be played at Lincoln Pius X. The Warriors are coming off a win over Wilber-Clatonia and will be a tough matchup, Klanecky said.

“They like to control tempo and control the ball,” he said. “We will need to slow the game down.”

The Eagles (0-5) will host Malcolm (5-0) Friday, Sept. 30. Malcolm shut out Tri County 48-0 Sept. 23.
