Milford track and field opened its season March 16 with a meet at Concordia University’s field house. The Eagles finished seventh in the girls’ team standings and sixth in the boys’ race.

The story of the day was Lilly Kenning. The sophomore set a new meet and school record in the 1,600-meter run, winning the race in 5:13.28.

Coach Cody Gregory said Kenning outkicked Kassidy Stuckey of York, the reigning Class B state champion, to win.

The previous school record was 5:37.56, set by Ashley Kroese in 2018.

Kenning’s mark was one of six personal bests set by returning Eagles. Brooklyn McDonald tied her PR in the high jump at 4-10 and tied for third. Addi Mowinkel set a new best mark in the shot put at 31-10.75 but finished out of the medals.

For the boys, Gavin Dunlap cut almost 30 seconds off his 3,200-meter time from last season and placed third in 10:37.6.

Hudson Mullet earned third in the 800-meter run in 2:13.26.

Gavin Piening finished sixth with a personal best of 9.49 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Caden Nelson stumbled in the finals and finished eighth.

Although it wasn’t a PR, Sarah Spahr cleared 5-0 in the high jump to place second.

Freshman Avery Carter impressed with his 1,600-meter run. He had to battle through early traffic, Gregory said, but finished in 4:49.84 and fourth place. The time ranks eighth in the MHS charts.

Milford relay teams had good days, as well. The girls’ 4x800-meter team of Delaney Carraher, Kylie Jakub, Kaitlin Kontor and Kenning won in 10:39.15.

Spahr, Kontor, Carraher and Kenning teamed up in the 4x400 to finish sixth in 4:37.38.

The boys’ 4x800 team of Carter, Kaleb Eickhoff, Mullet and Isaac Roth ran to second place in 8:48.58, and Piening, Carter, Roth and Mullet teamed up to finish fourth in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:46.98.

The Eagles are scheduled to compete Saturday, March 25, at Ashland-Greenwood and then at Wilber-Clatonia Tuesday, March 28, starting at 2 p.m.
