It was a busy week for the Milford softball team. The Eagles finished it 4-2 and third place in the Fairbury Invitational.

“It was a great week,” Coach Shelly Mowinkel said. “I’m so impressed with the girls. It’s fun to see different people step up at different times.”

The week started with a 13-1 win over Wilber-Clatonia Aug. 30. MHS scored 11 runs in the second inning to end early via the run rule.

Addi Mowinkel was 3-3 and drove in four runs, with Camille Stauffer, Riley Springer and Ayla Roth adding two hits each.

On Sept. 1, the Eagles hosted Freeman and Malcolm for a triangular and were 1-1. Milford beat Freeman 6-5, scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth to win. Mowinkel said MHS scored all its runs with two outs.

Malcolm downed the Eagles 9-4, but Milford finished with nine hits in the game. Kaitlin Kontor was 2-3, and Camille Stauffer hit a triple and drove in a run.

“They all were really good games,” Coach Mowinkel said. “I was pleased with how we performed.”

On Sept. 3, the Eagles headed to Fairbury for a tournament and finished the day in third place. MHS opened with a 4-3 win over Centennial.

“It took a bit to get going,” Mowinkel said.

Stauffer and Macy Stutzman each hit a double for MHS.

Game two saw Milford battle Grand Island Northwest. The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and didn’t look back in shutting out the Eagles 7-0. Northwest’s pitcher held Milford hitless.

“They are very good,” Mowinkel said. “Credit their pitcher. She was phenomenal. I felt we played well, even in the loss.”

The final game of the day saw Fairbury in the opposing dugout. Milford knew it couldn’t take the Jeffs lightly, Mowinkel said. Milford was up to the challenge, scoring six runs in the third inning and winning the game 9-1.

Izzy Yeackley, Kontor, Myranda Schildt and Roth had two hits each.

Mowinkel was pleased to see no errors by the Milford defense.

“It was a great way to finish the week,” she said.

She was especially pleased with shortstop Addi Mowinkel who had just one error in 20 touches during the week.

The Eagles (9-3) defeated York 7-5 Sept. 6, will play at Fairbury Thursday, Sept. 8, and travel to West Point-Beemer Saturday, Sept. 10.
