A fire in rural Milford destroyed a camper and led to the death of a pet inside.

Travis Fougeron, First Assistant Chief for the Milford Volunteer Fire Department, said that Milford and Pleasant Dale fire crews responded to reports of a camper fire at Shepard and Alimo Roads April 2 at 4 p.m.

The structure was engulfed upon arrival. Crews were able to extinguish the fire and depart the scene around 8 p.m.

A preliminary investigation of the scene by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal Agency showed that the fire may have been caused by stray embers from a nearby fire pit.

No one was injured in the fire but a family pet was trapped inside and was unable to be retrieved.

Members of the Milford Junior Firefighters were on hand after the fire to help clean hoses and restock trucks.
