Time changes this weekend

Daylight Savings Time ends early Sunday morning, so don't forget to set your clocks *back* one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. It's also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, as well.

County broadband testing may create new opportunity

Seward County residents came through when asked to test and document their broadband service last spring, but the Seward County group behind the effort has not yet heard what the results will mean in terms of funding for improvements. Read more in the Oct. 30 Independent.

SPORTS

Friday night lights - playoff style

The first round of 11-man football playoffs kicks off tonight. In Class B, Seward will host Lincoln Pius X at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium. Milford will be at Ashland-Greenwood for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Class C1. Malcolm's game against Mitchell kicks off at 6 p.m. in Malcolm in the Class C2 bracket.

District finals - state berths on the line

Seward and Milford volleyball will play in district finals tomorrow with the chance to qualify for state. Seward will host Lincoln Pius X at 11 a.m. at SHS, and Milford will play Columbus Lakeview in Columbus, also at 11 a.m.

EVENTS

TODAY - Chair yoga in Utica

Chair yoga will be offered Wednesdays and Fridays at 12:10 p.m. at the Utica Senior Center. There is no class the third Wednesday of the month.

TODAY - Just For Fun Fridays

Programs for adults are planned at the Seward Memorial Library every Friday of the month at 1:30 – 3 p.m. First Friday of the month, Ten Point Pitch. Second Friday, Bingo. Third Friday, crafts. Fourth Friday, puzzles.

THROUGH TODAY - Story walk

Enjoy a crisp fall walk and listen to the leaves crunching under your feet on the trail starting at Plum Creek Garden. As you walk along the trail, enjoy Jory John’s Halloween book, “The Good, the Bad, and the Spooky.” Stop by the Seward Memorial Library through Friday, Nov. 1, to pick up a sheet with instructions.

SUNDAY - Fall bazaar

The St. Paul Lutheran School Parents' Association will host a fall bazaar Sunday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school gym, 1100 D Street, Utica. Free-will donations will benefit school projects, with 10% donated to the Orphan Grain Train for hurricane relief efforts. The bazaar will include soup and desserts, a bake sale, vendor fair and quilt raffle.

SUNDAY - Fun run

The Mayor's Halloween Fun Run will be Sunday, Nov. 3, starting at noon at Plum Creek Park. Runners are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costumes. Registration may be done at the park before the run.

MONDAY - Broasted chicken

The Seward VFW will host a broasted chicken supper the first Monday of every month from 5 – 7 p.m. Donations help support all of the group’s projects. The public is welcome.

THROUGH NOV. 5 - Decor Days

Fall Décor Days, sponsored by the Friends of Seward Library, runs through Tuesday, Nov. 5, during normal operating hours of the library. If you have any decorations that you would like to donate, drop them by the library. There are a wide variety of knick-knacks, accessories, floral baskets and more for sale as a fundraiser.

FUNERAL SERVICES

WEFER, Craig

An open viewing for Craig Wefer will be today, Nov. 1, from 12:30-2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Utica. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. at the church, with committal to follow in the Utica Cemetery.
