Local drivers win weekend

It was a great weekend for the local racing teams – two big wins and five top 10 finishes out of seven events.

The big one was the Peterson Team's victory at the US 36 high bank track in Osborn, Missouri, June 18. The Wayne Hicks Memorial hosted Sport Modifieds with an added purse of $1,066 to win. Five local teams competed.

The 5D (Devyn Peterson) was on the pole of the seven-car second heat. The team is on a role and it continued with Peterson able to cruse to the win.

It was a draw/redraw for starting spots. From the third row, he was able to work his way up to second behind the 5T of Tyler Nerud of Dorchester.

With a caution causing a green-white-checker restart, Peterson was able to challenge coming out of the last corner. At the flag stand with the cars side by side, no one knew who won at the line. It was determined that the 5D was the winner by a fraction of a second – great race by the local drivers.

Also on Friday the Wergin and Stutzman teams were at I-80 Speedway.

The Wergin brothers were in the second heat. Brandon (61B) was in the front row with Hunter (2X) back in row three. Brandon was able to finish second with Hunter not able to move up and finished fifth. The top three were inverted for the feature.

Shane Stutzman (22s) was in the third heat at sixth. He was able to pass the five cars in front of him for the victory.

In the feature, the 61B was in the first row, 22s in row four and 2X back in the seventh row. Brandon fell back some but was able to finish eighth. Hunter was involved in a wreck. Car in front of him spun and he was able to stop, but cars behind him weren't as lucky and smashed him pretty good. He was done for the night and was scored in 19th.

Stutzman was able to move to the front and battled the #99 of Iowa native Jesse Sobbing to the end. He took the checkered flags in first for a local team’s second victory of the night.

Saturday Brandon was back at Junction Motor Speedway and Hunter and Stutzman went to Eagle.

Brandon started third in the nine-car heat to determine starting spots for the A. He finished fifth and that put him in the front row starting spot. He was able to navigate the slick track for a top five finish in fourth.

At Eagle Raceway, in the first of two heats, Stutzman was in the last row and was able to finish second. This inverted him for the A starting positions, but with his track points in third for the season he was in row five.

Hunter was in the second heat and just missed the invert in sixth. The 2X was able to repair the damage from the night before to make it to Eagle.

Stutzman was able to work his way up to the second spot at the end. Hunter held his own and finished 13th.

It was a good weekend for the local drivers after a hot week getting ready.
