Maureen Sue Sperling, of Seward, was born March 6, 1940, to Bernhard and Hulda (Luebbe) Ahlschwede in Seward.

Maureen spent her early years on the farm and enjoyed all of it. Her brother, Gordon, shared these years with her. She attended country district school for five years and then three years at St. John Lutheran School in Seward. She graduated from Seward High School in 1957. Maureen went on to attend St. John College in Winfield, Kansas, graduating with an Elementary Education Degree. On June 30, 1962, Maureen was united in marriage to Milo Sperling at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. They were blessed with two girls and two boys. During the time the children were growing up, Maureen pursued some classes in culinary arts and nutrition at Southeast Community College. She then continued to work in the food industry in various capacities for many years. Maureen then pursued a change by joining the Celiac Support Association in Seward, which proved to be rewarding in many ways. Maureen was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Seward and served on various committees and boards. She was also a member of LWL (Lutheran Women’s League) and the Seward County Historical Society. She could spend hours reviewing the generational ancestry of families in Seward County. Maureen enjoyed being with people and engaging in their interests.

She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening and reading. Maureen liked to spend time outdoors listening and watching the birds. When it came to cooking, she enjoyed finding new recipes to try when entertaining family and friends. Maureen passed away Feb. 6, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family at the age of 82 years and 11 months.
