Fifteen members of the Milford National Archery in the Schools Program team traveled to Sandy, Utah, April 29-30 to compete in the Western Region national archery shoot.

Students competed in both the 3D and Bullseye competitions, which both teams had qualified for earlier in March at the Nebraska state shoot.

Milford archers performed well with several shooting their personal best while competing against nearly 1,400 other students in grades 4-12.

Layla Elstun led the girls for Milford shooting her best with a 268/300. Jay Wissenburg IV led the Milford boys with a score of 285/300, which led him to Milford’s first-ever national archery award.

He placed fifth out of 313 in the middle school boys division and was 19th overall out of more than 750 boys in all divisions.

“The scenery, meeting other shooters and coaches from across the country and the opportunity to reward the team for all their hard work this season made the trip an amazing experience that everyone will remember for years to come,” coach Jim Wissenburg said. “Our team has a tremendous number of great young shooters so we plan to be back at nationals in the near future.”
