Milford boys sink Vikings

With just one game on the schedule last week, the Milford boys’ basketball team spent time improving, Coach Tony Muller said.

“We needed to improve our press, correct where people were beating us,” he said. “We worked a lot on defense.”

The focus came after Milford’s 58-44 win over Columbus Lakeview Jan. 18. Muller said the Vikings are an athletic team but had a hard time scoring.

After an even first quarter, Milford pulled away in the second, outscoring Lakeview 21-6 in the period.

“Our pressure got to them,” Muller said. “It was really big to hold them to six.”

A good third quarter for the Eagles allowed the bench to see playing time in the fourth.

Muller liked his team’s energy to start the game and said the team would try to keep that going.

Seth Stutzman led the Eagles with 27 points on 11-15 shooting.

“He did a great job posting up and getting open,” Muller said.

Jaxon Weyand added 11 points and Micah Hartwig 10 points, seven assists and four steals.

The Eagles (12-3) defeated Sutton 61-23 Jan. 25 and will host Wilber-Clatonia Friday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m.

The Southern Nebraska Conference tournament starts Monday, Jan. 31. Milford is the top seed and will play the winner of Fillmore Central/Superior Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 7:15 p.m. in Milford.
