The Milford softball team was part of the Class C field at the state tournament Oct. 12, but the Eagles were one of the first to be finished.

Milford was the eighth seed and played top-seeded Hastings St. Cecilia in the opening round. The Hawkettes took care of the Eagles 10-4. Kaitlin Kontor led MHS with a 3-4 game, and Addi Mowinkel and Camille Stauffer each drove in two runs.

“They are a great team and hit the ball very hard,” Coach Shelly Mowinkel said. “We had jitters early, but after we calmed down, we played better and hit the ball.”

The HSC hitters jumped on Milford pitcher Myranda Schildt early, scoring three runs in the first inning and four in the second. Riley Springer came on in relief and was able to slow the HSC attack, striking out five in her 4 2/3 innings.

The loss dropped Milford to the elimination bracket, where the Eagles played Malcolm. The Clippers put up eight runs in the second inning, and the hole was too deep for Milford to dig out of. Malcolm won 12-4. Izzy Yeackley was 2-3 with a home run and two RBIs, and Stauffer, Maeli Kubicek, Mekenzie Riley and Schildt had two hits each.

“We outhit Malcolm, but we couldn’t get anything going,” Coach Mowinkel said.

Milford finished the season with a 21-10 record and will graduate six seniors – Kontor, Stauffer, Amy Bousquet, Riley, Josie Hansen and Autumn Wissenburg.
