The Milford volleyball team played six matches last week and finished second at the Malcolm Boosters Invitational, going 3-2 with both losses to perennial power Lincoln Lutheran.
“We had a great week of selfless volleyball. The girls played for each other and had each other’s back,” Coach Emily Restau said. “At the Malcolm tournament, we saw a lot of grit and determination in some close sets. We continue to learn a lot about this team in each match.”
The week started with a sweep of Fillmore Central Sept. 10, 25-18, 25-10, 25-14. Kylie Jakub delivered 41 assists, and three hitters reached double figures in kills – Sydney Burkey 13, Shayla Rautenberg 12 and Sarah Reynolds 11.
Rautenberg also put up seven blocks, with Burkey adding five.
Milford started pool play at Malcolm sept. 12 and beat Fairbury 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 before losing to Lincoln Lutheran 25-17, 25-17.
In the win over Fairbury, Burkey paced the team with 15 kills. Rautenberg put up six blocks, and Jakub delivered 23 assists.
Against Lincoln Lutheran, Taylor Oldfield picked up eight digs, while Burkey notched five kills.
The Eagles were back at Malcolm Sept. 14 and finished pool play with a 25-23, 25-19 win over Elmwood-Murdock. Burkey had eight kills and Rautenberg four blocks.
In the semifinals, Milford defeated the host Clippers 21-25, 25-21, 25-23 behind 12 kills from Burkey and 11 by Rautenberg, who also recorded four blocks. Jakub delivered 26 assists.
In the championship match, the Warriors downed the Eagles 25-15, 25-20. Rautenberg had five blocks and Jakub seven assists.
The Eagles (5-3) were to play in a triangular at Malcolm with David City Sept. 17 and host Ashland-Greenwood, Duchesne and Palmyra Saturday, Sept. 21, starting at 9 a.m.
