Normally, Milford’s final wrestling competition of December is a triangular. With event limits imposed this year because of Covid-19, the Eagles turned the day into a quadrangular with David City, Syracuse and Twin River.

The Eagles went 2-1, beating Twin River and Syracuse but losing to David City by three.

Coach Joe Schluckebier said the Eagles wrestled well in all three duals. Twin River’s numbers are down, but they have some good wrestlers, he said.

Milford had seen Syracuse at the Logan View Invitational. Schluckebier said the Rockets have good wrestlers, as well.

The dual started with Konner Schluckebier wrestling state medalist Barret Brandt. Schluckebier was coming off his first loss, and the coach said he was a little nervous about the match. Konner won by pin.

The dual with David City was the marquee matchup of the evening for MHS.

“We had a plan to beat them, and we thought we had the guys to do it,” Coach Schluckebier said.

He doesn’t usually move wrestlers from weight to weight in a dual, while other coaches do. David City, for example, moved its 170 pounder to 182 to avoid Christopher Scdoris, but Thomas Vance got the pin in what the coach described as “a crazy match.”

In the end, David City won 42-39.

“It was close,” Coach Schluckebier said. “It was a fun night.”

After the five-day moratorium, the Eagles were back on the mat for practice Dec. 28. Their next competition is set for Thursday, Jan. 7, at Wilber-Clatonia.
