Seniors end season in area tournament

The Crete Stop N Shop Post 147 seniors saw their season end July 24 in the Class B Area 1 tournament.

Crete opened the postseason with a 12-4 loss to Nemaha July 22. Nemaha scored seven runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach.

Micah Hartwig, Max Connell and Mason Crumbliss had two hits each. Braden Schmeckpeper doubled and drove in two for Crete.

Crete scored one run in the first inning and made it hold up for a 1-0 win over Beatrice July 23 in an elimination game.

Micah Hartwig and Max Connell started the game with back-to-back singles. Both advanced on a ground ball by Tadd TeBrink. On a ground ball by Mason Crumbliss, Hartwig was thrown out at home.

Schmeckpeper singled to shortstop to drive in Connell. He finished the game 2-3, including a double.

Hartwig pitched all seven innings and struck out eight.

Crete came back July 24 against Fairbury in another elimination game and lost 3-1. Fairbury scored its runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Crete’s run came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. TeBrink and Crumbliss both singled to open the inning. With two outs, Reece Vertin singled to center to drive in TeBrink.

Hartwig was 2-3 to lead the team.

Crete finished the season with an 11-13 record.
