Seward County girls face tough opponents on mats

The Seward County girls’ wrestling team got a lot of mat time last week, competing in the Norm Manstedt Invite Jan. 5 and at Malcolm Jan. 7.

The Norm Manstedt tournament at High Plains featured more than 50 girls’ wrestling teams, Coach Andy Sistek said.

Senior Amy Sistek was the top finisher for SewCo, placing third at 235 pounds. Most of her matches went all six minutes, the coach said. Among the wrestlers she beat was the No. 4 ranked wrestler in the state.

“No one else placed that high,” Coach Sistek said. “It was a big test. It was a long day.”

SewCo had four JV wrestlers earn medals that day. Kobie Kosek was third at 100 pounds; Annaliese Sistek was third at 135 pounds; Abigayil Wunderlich was fourth at 145 pounds; and Ava Slechta was third at 235 pounds.

At the Malcolm Invite, Amy Sistek almost became SewCo’s first ever champion.

“She had the match won 4-0,” Coach Sistek said. “She stood up, leaned out of position and got taken to her back.”

The senior finished second.

Coach Sistek said the athletes try to make the losses into lessons.

“We will be battle-tested in the postseason,” he said.

Lauren Frihauf was also second at 105 pounds. Grace Schernikau placed fourth at 110.

The team will be on the road Thursday, Jan. 12, at Northwest to wrestle the Vikings and then compete at Nebraska City Saturday, Jan. 14.
