Honor roll released

Seward High released its second quarter honor roll for the 2024-25 school year. Find out who made the list in the Jan. 22 Independent.

Around the country

Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States yesterday. Among the groups performing at the inauguration ceremony was a choir from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Because of sub-zero air temperatures and even colder wind chills, Lincoln Public Schools canceled classes today. Outside Lincoln, Centennial, Seward, Milford and Malcolm public and parochial schools and Dorchester districts were among those who started school late because of the extreme cold.

TODAY - After school programs start at SML

The Seward Memorial Library has three afternoons planned each week from Jan. 21 through March 27. These programs offer activities to keep kids engaged and learning new things. Registration is required. Tuesdays are LEGOS® Adventures for K-fourth grade, complete a construction challenge each week as well as have free time with LEGO® blocks. Wednesdays are Art Adventures for second-eighth grade – create new works of art each week. Thursdays are STEM Adventures for K-fourth grade – explore the fascinating world of science, technology, engineering and math with fun projects. Each program begins at 4 p.m. and lasts 45 minutes. Stop by or call the library to register.

TODAY - Story time begins

Bring children to the Seward Memorial Library Jan. 21 through the week of March 27 for reading programs for young children. Toddler Time for children ages 0-3 with a guardian present are Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. or Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. Story Time for children 3-6 who have not yet attended kindergarten is Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. or Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Parents may drop off children inside the library for the Story Time programs and are welcome to stay if they feel their child will be more comfortable knowing they are in the building. All programs last 45 minutes.

TODAY - Pickleball

Indoor pickleball continues every Tuesday through March at the E-Free Church. Newbies can come at 5 p.m. to learn how to play and everyone is welcome. Contact Jodi Hughes @ jhughes62@hotmail.com for more information.

TOMORROW - Buddy check

A social gathering of veterans dedicated to reducing and eliminating veteran suicide will be from 7 – 9 p.m. at the VFW, 243 S. Ninth St., in Seward The group meets monthly on the 22nd.

WISEHART, Julie

Rosary for Julie Wisehart will be Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Graveside service and interment will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Seward Cemetery.
