The city of Seward has purchased the home at 410 E. Seward St. and plans to remove all structures from the site to expand green space just west of the dog park.

Educational Service Unit 6 hosted its annual High School Academic Quiz Bowl Feb. 25 at the Living Word Lutheran Church in Seward. Seward A placed third in the large school division, Malcolm A and B went 1-2 in the medium school division with Centennial A in third.

Total snow accumulations between 2 and 7 inches. Locally higher amounts are possible. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph. Travel will be very difficult to impossible. A proposal to allow mobile sports betting advanced to the floor yesterday in the Nebraska Unicameral. If approved, the proposal would be included on the next ballot for Nebraska voters to give final yay or nay.
Nebraska senators also postponed debate on a bill that would raise their salaries, citing other work that needs to be done first.
Two games played with contrasting paces and with varying levels of drama unfolded as the Bulldogs and Red Raiders took advantage of a warm St. Patrick’s Day in Orange City, Iowa. Ultimately, the 21st-ranked Concordia University baseball team emerged with the doubleheader sweep, winning by scores of 15-7 and 2-1 in a second straight road trip to open league play. Matt Rhoades collected four hits in game one while Ty Nekoliczak delivered the go-ahead RBI single in game two in providing just enough run support in a well-pitched game by Braxton Greenburg.

For the second time in five years, Concordia University’s Devin Smith has been honored as an Athletics Director of the Year Award winner by the National Association of Directors of Athletics. Smith was announced by NACDA as one of the 28 honorees for 2024-25 March 17. The award spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior College/Community Colleges). Winners will be recognized in conjunction with the 60th Annual NACDA & Affiliates Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida, on June 10.
The ADOY Award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities. Smith is one of four athletics directors from the NAIA level to earn the ADOY Award for the 2024-25 athletic year.
Smith has served as Director of Athletics at his alma mater since June of 2010.

Seward County Democrats will meet with Sen. Jana Hughes to discuss upcoming legislature and proposed bills for Nebraska on Tuesday, March 18, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Union Bank and Trust, 220 S. Fourth St., in Seward.
