Eighteen candidates for local, regional and statewide offices spoke at the Seward County League of Women Voters Candidates Night Sept. 25.

Candidates had the opportunity to introduce themselves and meet with the public about issues ranging from state taxes and medical marijuana to local streets and school bus routes.

Question-and-answer forums were held for Legislative District 24, Seward Mayor, Seward City Council and Seward Public Schools Board of Education.

In the Legislative District 24 forum, candidates Jana Hughes of Seward and Patrick Hotovy of York highlighted affordable housing, lower taxes, better broadband and quality childcare availability as some of the top issues facing the state.

Other candidates in attendance included Carol Blood and and Scott Zimmerman, candidates for governor; Helen Raikes and Kirk Penner for State Board of Education District 5; Rhonda Rich for Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District Subdivision 7; and Raegan Hain for Seward County Commission District 3, in addition to candidates for Seward-specific offices.
