Car show exceeds expectations

When Trevor Fehlhafer started planning a car show in Utica, he didn’t know what to expect. He’d been to car shows so knew what should happen, and that helped, he said.

The Utica car show Aug. 1 exceeded expectations with 243 registered cars and another 20 arriving after registration closed, he said.

“For the first year, that is ridiculous,” he said. “You couldn’t ask for a better day.”

The show was done in the east parking lot at Centennial High School and had to expand into the grass to the south, which Fehlhafer hadn’t planned.

Cars came from six states – South Dakota, Missouri, Minnesota, Colorado, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Fehlhafer said the owner from Colorado was driving through Nebraska, saw the sign for the show and decided to stop.

The show included 38 classes and a handful of specialty awards including best in show and one for the Elf Society.

The Elf Society’s winner was a small lime green BMW “because it was elf sized,” Fehlhafer said.

Best in Show went to an orange and white 1969 Camaro RS.

Fehlhafer is already looking ahead to next year’s show. He plans to expand awards to the top three in each class and add best in manufacturers, as well as stepping back from judging.

He said organization will be better and will use more automated options than hard copies.
