Church prepares for 50th

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church near Milford is preparing for its 50th anniversary in July by making a banner and getting festivities set up.

Sharon Radford with the church has had children work on putting symbols on a banner to have for the anniversary.

Radford said banners are an important symbol in the church.

“Banners have been used since biblical times,” she said. “Banners can show how a group of people are united in their beliefs. This banner will go before us and show us that we are united in our faith.”

Radford said she wanted the kids to do the banner because it gives them an opportunity to learn about the symbols.

“They need to know what they mean when they see them,” she said. “Symbols talk. It doesn’t do any good to have a banner in the church that is supposed to bring glory to God if they don’t know what it means.”

Pastor Steve Stork also said the church will hold celebrations in July and September for its anniversary.

On Sunday, July 16, the church will have a special worship service. Former district president Russ Sommerfeld will preach at the service which will be followed by a special dinner.

On Sunday, Sept. 10, Good Shepherd will host a concert by Paul Soulek and the Concordia men’s chorus at 1 p.m. Games and activities for all ages will be held at 2 p.m. followed by a community barbecue.

“The community is invited to join us for the barbecue, concert and activities in September,” Stork said.
