Seward County will receive a $500,000 grant to determine ways to increase pedestrian and motor vehicle safety on State Street as it passes through the Southeast Community College Campus in Milford.

Seward County Commission Chair Misty Ahmic said the county learned recently that its application for the Safe Streets and Roads for All grant had been approved. The grant program was established as part of the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Ahmic said a feasibility study for the road will begin in 2025.

State Street begins at the curve in Pioneers Road in front of the college and runs southward through the campus before becoming 238th Road.

The U.S. Department of Transportation website indicates $2.9 billion in federal funding has been awarded to more than 1,600 communities across the nation and in Puerto Rico as part of the Safe Streets and Roads program.

Nearly $2 billion is available for future rounds of funding in the program that is to run through 2026.

The program offers grants to create comprehensive plans to address roadway safety, as well as to implement those plans.
