County investigating trashed tires

The Seward County Sheriff’s Office is investigating how a large number of trashed tires came to be dumped on private land near Fletcher and 154th roads.

Seward County Roads Superintendent Jon Regnier told the county commissioners on Aug. 11 that a property owner reported the illegal dumping of tires on his property in the area north of the Pleasant Dale exit off I-80.

He believes the tires were dumped there in late July. Regnier said the passenger car tires would likely fill one or two dump trucks.

“There’s a significant amount out there,” Regnier said.

Sheriff Mike Vance said Aug. 14 that the initial call on the tires came to his department and they have been working to determine who dumped the tires. They are now working with Lancaster County law enforcement to see if the tires originated there.

Regnier asked the county to fund his department’s staff hours, use of equipment and the disposal fee to have the tires properly taken to the landfill in Butler County.

“We need to get them cleaned up now,” Regnier said.

County workers had the property owner’s permission to enter the field to see how many tires had been dumped there.

Commissioners approved funds of up to $5,000 to assist with the cleanup, which will be drawn from the county’s inheritance tax fund. Ahmic will contact the Seward/Saline  Solid Waste Management Board to see if it would reimburse the county for expenses related to the cleanup.
