County scrap tire collection rolls around for two days in May

Separate days planned for businesses, residential drop offs

Seward County will collect scrap tires over two days in mid-May, separating business and residential drop off at the Highway Department’s Missile Base shop, 3427 Waverly Road.

Businesses may drop off scrap tires from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 16, and residents from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 17.

Seward County Commissioner Raegan Hain said the schedule is intended to give households the opportunity to drop off tires. The first tire collection event in 2024 had to be closed on Friday noon due to the unanticipated volume of tires dropped off that first day.

With the Saturday hours designated for household drop offs, Hain said there should be opportunity for people who work on Friday to participate.

Because this spring’s event is funded by the county without a state or federal grant, the criteria for what can be accepted is set by the county. This year, the Seward-Saline Solid Waste Board made a $15,000 contribution to the project and Seward County is contributing an equal amount.

Entry to the drop-off site will be allowed only on 350th Road from Highway 34, and all traffic will exit on Waverly Road heading east to 336th Road.

Those bringing tires to the event must be able to unload them, and tires must be removed from rims.

Only vehicles and trailers with Seward County plates and drivers with a Seward County identification will be allowed to drop off scrap tires. Vehicles parked on county roads or in ditches prior to the event will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Dump trucks and side dumps will be allowed, but no enclosed trailers, livestock trailers, straight trucks or semis are permitted.

Households and businesses are limited to two loads, and anyone accepting tire disposal fees is ineligible to participate.
