After five qualifying rounds and some match play to set the varsity team, the Milford golfers were in competition March 27 at the Seward Invite.

The team finished in fifth with a 331. Brodie Roth paced the Eagles with a 79 for seventh place. Zephyr Mowinkel shot an 81 and was 12th, and Landon Roth carded an 82 for 13th. Zane Jackson finished with an 89 and Jarrett Miller shot a 101.

“It was nice to get on the course and compete this week,” Coach Chaise Vegas said. “Nothing compares to actually getting on the course for your first tournament of the year, though.”

With spring sports, he said, the weather is constantly changing. From 90 degrees to 40 in a couple days, athletes have to adapt. At Seward, it was about 40 degrees with 25-35 MPH winds out of the north all day, Vegas said.

“The conditions were brutal but there were some really good scores in Seward,” Vegas said.

He was pleased with how the Eagles played for their first tournament of the season. Brodie Roth’s game was better suited to the windy conditions because he doesn’t hit the ball as high into the air as others do, the coach said.

“With the weather, this was a good early season test to work on the mental side of golf and taking it one shot at a time. Brodie has a true golfer’s mentality in those conditions, not caring about the last shot and focusing on the next one ahead of him,” Vegas said.

The other Eagles improved their scores on the back nine, which he was happy to see.

“It was nice to get on the course and compete with other teams and get the season started. Lot of golf left in the year but this was a great score to start the year as a team,” he said.

The team was scheduled to play a quadrangular at York March 31 and at Syracuse Wednesay, April 1. The next competition is at Palmyra Tuesday, April 7, and at Friend Wednesday, April 8.
