City, county and state offices will be closed Monday, May 27, to observe Memorial Day.

Memorial Day services around Seward County on Monday, May 27, include:
Goehner—A ceremony hosted by the Beaver Crossing Post 178 will be held at Mound Prairie Cemetery at 9 a.m. The speaker will be John Hughes.
Gresham—Cedar Lawn Cemetery at 9 a.m. A breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m. at the Community Center.\
Malcolm—Malcolm Cemetery at 9 a.m.
Utica—St. Patrick’s Cemetery will have at 9 a.m. service in Utica. Msgr. Mark Huber will have prayers for those who wish to attend. Memorial Day Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served after mass.
Seward —North Cemetery at 10 a.m. with speaker Shane Varejcka.
Milford—Blue Mound Cemetery at 10 a.m. Rose Kenny will speak. Rolls and coffee will be served at the Senior Center after the ceremony.
Garland—A presentation will be made at 10 a.m. in front of the American Legion. The guest speaker will be Kirk Gottschalk, Seward Middle School principal.

Pleasant Dale—Pleasant Dale Cemetery at 11 a.m. The American Legion will host a luncheon following the ceremony.
Beaver Crossing—Beaver Crossing Village Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. John Hughes will be the speaker.
Cordova—Zastrow Cemetery at 2 p.m. Tim Wilbeck will be the speaker.

Church celebrates 150 years

The West Blue Church, nestled on the loop where County Road 1900 turns into 224th on the county line between Saline and Seward counties, will be celebrating its 150th anniversary on May 26. The Sunday service will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by a potluck luncheon. Read more about the celebration in the May 22 Milford Times.

SUNDAY - County museum open

The Seward County Historical Society Museum is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1:30 – 5 p.m.

SUNDAY - Concert opens summer season

The Seward Municipal Band will have its first concert of the season Sunday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the bandshell. Concerts will be every Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. at the bandshell.

SUNDAY and MONDAY - Library closed

The Seward Memorial Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day.

SPORTS

CU track continues national competition

Jenna Esch and her women’s 4x400-meter relay teammates made noise May 23 while leading the way for Concordia University Track & Field at the 2024 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. Esch qualified for the finals of the 800 meters early in the afternoon before leading off the 4x4 amidst the twilight of the Marion, Indiana, skies. The 4x4 that included Kayla Kirchner, Trinity Tuls and Jordan Koepke won its heat in the prelims while reserving a spot in Friday’s finals. Those were the major highlights on a busy day for the Bulldogs on the track and in the throws.

MAKOVICKA, Valerian

Visitation for Val Makovicka will be Friday, May 24, from 1-4 p.m. at Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home in Seward. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Seward, with a Rosary to be said at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. The graveside service and interment will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the church cemetery in rural Dwight.
