Cyclists will compete for Gravel World racing honors on some Seward County roads on Aug. 24.
The Seward County Board of Commissioners on July 22 approved Gravel World race spokesperson Jason Strohbehn’s request to route two separate races originating at Branched Oak Lake through some gravel roads near Garland. The longer of the two races travels up into Butler County and back.
The race begins around 9 a.m. and most riders will be done by noon or before.
Strohbehn told commissioners the number of bikes coming through would be smaller this year than last because the race with the largest number of entries is being routed in Lancaster and Cass counties this year.
Commissioners asked Strohbehn to consider placing signs along the roads that will be used for the bicycles, possibly ahead of the race, so drivers will be on the alert for them.
Roads will remain open to vehicle traffic, and Strohbehn said bikers are to follow standard rules of the road, including not littering. Strohbehn said the group has consequences in the race for violating road or trash rules, but also has a vehicle follow the last of the racers on any given path to assure the area is left in good shape.
He said a Nebraska State Patrol vehicle will lead the races and the Valparaiso Volunteer Fire Department will be on hand near Branched Oak Lake. Commissioners also asked him to connect with the Seward County Sheriff’s office prior to the races.
One section of the routes may be detoured from Branched Oak Road to Oak Grove Road due to bridge construction.
The races are part of a multi-day event based in Lincoln.
Gravel biking is considered faster and less technical than mountain biking, but slower than road racing. Special tires are required. The two races coming through the county are 14 and 26 miles
The group’s triathlon races include running, biking and swimming.
Strohbehn told commissioners the group is looking for volunteers or nonprofit groups like 4-H or FFA groups to assist with the races.
