A Milford staff member was recently acknowledged for her dedication to students.

Rose Kenney, school counselor for Milford schools, was honored with the 2021 Nebraska State Colleges Counseling Excellence Award.

The NSCS Counseling Excellence Award is an annual award created to honor counselors for exemplary service and commitment to students. Students at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges have the opportunity to nominate high school counselors for the award.

Kenney said that the award came as a surprise and meant even more to her since it was a student-nominated honor.

“Since this award comes from nominations of past students, it is the most rewarding recognition in my eyes,” she said. “Hearing their sentiments made it very special and humbling, as it brought back memories working for and celebrating the accomplishments of these students.”

Kenney said her work as counselor has led her to form rare connections with students and her chance to help them through challenging circumstances is what makes the job worth it.

“As a school counselor, the true honor always comes from witnessing students overcome challenges, believing in themselves, pursuing their goals and reaping the rewards of their efforts,” she said.

Although Kenney's name is the one on the award, she credits the district and Milford community as a whole.

“This is not something I do alone,” she said. “It certainly takes a village to happen. The collaboration of our parents, staff, administration and community members is what makes Milford special.”
