GFWC Seward Womans Club program chair Dee Saucier-Hartmann presented the first GFWC “History Hero” for the USA-250 birthday year to local historian Gerald Meyer, serving for the last 10 years as historian at the Nebraska National Guard Museum in Seward.

He was presented the award and honored at the Jan. 10 meeting of the GFWC Seward Womans Club, where he talked about the Quilts of Valor program.

The award will be presented monthly during 2026 to celebrate the United States’ semiquincentennial. It will honor Seward County “historians” who have dedicated their time and efforts to promote, preserve and share various historical aspects of Greater Seward, Seward County and Nebraska.

A former history teacher, Meyer has served as the historian at the Nebraska National Guard Museum for 10 years and volunteered across the state to share the Nebraska National Guard and museum’s stories. He was the chair of the Andrew Higgins Memorial in Columbus and serves as a teacher each summer in the Summer Horizons student program through St. John Lutheran Church and School with three different military history classes.

He is a longtime community volunteer, a leader on the Seward Fourth of July Celebration Committee and invovled in promoting the USA-250 celebration in Seward at the NNG Museum this year. He is past board member of the Seward County Historical Society and involved extensively with the Seward County Chamber and Development Partnership.

He was presented a framed, signed certificate of appreciation and thanks from the members of the GFWC Seward Woman’s Club and Community of Seward for dedicating his life to sharing the lessons of history.
