MHS students get variety at career access day

Milford High School hosted a career access day where students listened to keynote speakers and checked out many different careers at stations on Nov. 8.

The day started off with keynote speaker Taylor Seibert and continued with 16 career presenters.

Each class rotated through four different presenters based on their grades. The speakers included topics such as hair design, journalism, health care, drones and much more.

A Fantasy Drone Show keynote presentation was held after the sessions and then two-hour hands-on learning sessions were hosted by teachers or community members.

Some of the hands-on sessions included leadership, learning LinkedIn, basic automotive maintenance, stock markets and investing, creative writing, military boot camp and more.

The day wrapped up with a mini drone show created by students in a previous session.

Rose Kenney, Milford’s school counselor, said the career access day was good for students.

“Our Milford High School students were exposed to a variety of career presenters, which provided more details not only about the presenter’s current career field but an opportunity to hear how most of their career paths changed multiple times,” she said. “Presenters shared from personal experiences how they showed up each day, were passionate about what they were doing and always kept their options open to finding the best fit for them and their families. They shared first-hand tips of appropriate job behaviors and advice for life.”

Kenney said the afternoon sessions were created by staff members or professional resources and devoted “real-time” experience for the students.

“Our students were able to set aside their books, notes and homework to experience these in-depth opportunities,” she said. “Each session had its challenges and rewarding moments.

“We hope these live encounters open our students’ minds to opportunities that maybe they hadn’t thought of and to try new things in life. We are blessed with an amazing staff who devoted extra time to plan and coordinate these experiences for our students.”
