Seward picked for A250

The city of Seward has been named Nebraska's Official Fourth of July Celebration City for the semiquincentennial. Jill Dolberg, interim director of History Nebraska, made the announcement in Seward March 15. The semiquincentennial is the 250th anniversary of the United States and will be celebrated in 2026.

Tree trimming tips

Although it may be common to associate spring and summer with yard work, March is the last month in which tree trimming is recommended. Not everyone follows proper tree trimming guidelines, and their trees may suffer because of it. An article in our upcoming Home and Acreage section will explain why this is and outline proper tree trimming practices.

Bluejays open track season

The Seward track team opened the season March 14 in the Sandhill Division of the Bulldog Track & Field Challenge at Concordia. The Seward girls finished second in the team standings, with the boys in fourth. Gold medalists for the Bluejays were Grace Brees, first in the 200-meter dash and the girls' 4x400-meter relay team of Lauren Frihauf, Emma Frihauf, Karsyn Fields and Brees.

Distance runners lead Eagles

Lilly Kenning set a new record, as the Milford track and field team opened its 2024 season at the Bulldog Track & Field Challenge at Concordia University March 14. Kenning won the 800-meter run in 2:23.17, breaking the previous record of 2:24.58. Avery Carter won the 1,600-meter run, and Isaac Roth took the top spot in the 60-meter hurdles. Sarah Spahr cleared 5-3.75 to win the high jump.

Cardinals soar on the diamond

The Crete/Milford Cardinals baseball team flew into action as they kicked off week one of their baseball season with a Saturday tournament that showcased their talent and determination on the diamond. The baseball team proved formidable against Falls City, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament. They faced the Auburn Bulldogs in their second game of the day. Although the Bulldogs won their first game 15-0 they were no match for CM. CM beat Auburn 12-1.

CU women advance, men bow out

The Concordia University women's basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA national tournament March 16 with a 80-62 win over Wayland Baptist University. The Bulldogs defeated Benedictine College 67-57 in overtime March 15.

The Concordia men opened the postseason March 15, as well, with an 83-81 win over Indiana University Northwest but lost to Louisiana State University-Shreveport 91-67 March 16 to end the season.
