Mowinkel earns state golf medal

It’s been 11 years since a Milford golfer earned a state medal, but Zephyr Mowinkel broke the drought May 29.

The MHS sophomore shot a 37-38 75 May 28 and a 36-37 73 May 29 for a combined 148 and finished tied for fifth in the Class C standings.

“It was two days he was pretty happy with,” Coach Dalton Mogul said.

With perfect weather both days, the goal was to play par golf at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course in Grand Island. Par is a 72 on the course.

Day one, Mogul said, the goal was to not force shots.

“Hit the greens in regulation and make putts,” he said.

Because Mowinkel plays a lot of two-day tournaments during the summer season, a two-day tournament was not difficult. He was 11th after day one.

“We said you’re on the outside looking in. Be as aggressive as you want,” Mogul said. “He birdied the first, and that set the tone for the day.”

A rainstorm blew threw with four holes left for Mowinkel, but he was able to par all four holes to secure the medal.

“Last year he was disappointed in how he played. This was a good showing for him,” Mogul said.
