MPS looks to expand class space, receive more funding

Milford school board members met July 14 for their monthly meeting, with highlights of the agenda including extended classroom space, policy updates, and increased state funding.

The high school’s south stage will be converted into classroom space, specifically for Career and Technical Education (CTE) and a maker space. This will be dedicated to specialized equipment like 3D printers, screen printing presses, laser engravers and more.

Relocating CTE equipment to the stage will free up other classroom spaces that can be used “for small-group instruction and academic support—creating more opportunities for individualized student support,” Superintendent Mitch Kubicek said.  “This is another step in our effort to make every square foot of our building functional and supportive for kids.”

Minor updates were made to policies regarding exempt students’ participation in extracurriculars. These updates were made to more closely align the policy’s language with recent changes in state laws, but they will not make a practical difference in Milford’s day-to-day operations.

“We have a long-standing history of positive partnerships with families who choose exempt schooling, and we will continue to support student involvement and collaboration moving forward,” Kubicek said.

Looking forward, the district is expected to receive an increase in state funding for the upcoming school year. Kubicek said the board has started discussing how this increase in funding will impact the overall budget and property tax request.

“More detailed conversations and decisions related to the budget will take place during the August and September board meetings,” Kubicek said.
