Propst, Curtis earn Republican slots for county commission

Two new faces will be on the Seward County Board of Commissioners in 2027.

Jon C. Propst and Jonathan M. Curtis will advance to the November ballot for the Seward County Board of Commissioners in Districts 3 and 5, respectively, after the May 12 Republican primary, and as of now, there are no other candidates on the fall ballot for those two seats.

Curtis garnered 392 votes over incumbent Commissioner Ken Schmeiding’s 142 to win the Republican nomination in District 5.

Propst slipped past two other candidates in District 3 with 230 votes. Tyler Dickinson received 210 votes and Kaely Eberspacher received 193 in that race for the Republican nomination, and again, there is no other candidate appearing on the fall ballot.

In the Seward County race for the Nebraska Board of Education District 5– which is a nonpartisan race where two candidates advance – Angie Eberspacher led the voting with 1,433 votes, Lana Daws had 1,273 and Michaela Conway had 236.

However, with all 360 precincts in that district reporting, the Nebraska Secretary of State reported that Eberspacher won the lead with 19,440 votes, Conway in second with 13,243 and Daws in third with 9,971 for those two slots on the fall ballot.

Nebraska Legislature District 24 Sen. Jana Hughes received 2,298 votes in Seward County and 5,166 across the district, while her challenger, Dan Winter, had 653 votes in Seward County and 1,712 district wide. Both will appear on the fall ballot. All 47 precincts in District 24 had been counted.

While three men have declared their candidacy for Seward County sheriff, only Tim Huntingon is an official candidate, so there was no voting on the sheriff’s race in the primary. Troy Schaefer and Trey Wayne had filed as candidates but missed the filing deadline for financial statements, removing them from the primary ballot. Both have launched write-in campaigns for the fall ballot.

Several other Seward County Republican candidates will appear on the November ballot but did not have competition for their party’s nomination in the primary. They include Seward County District 1 Commissioner Misty Ahmic, County Treasurer Jacob Zlatkovsky, County Clerk Brandy Johnson, County Assessor Marilyn Hladky, County Attorney Wendy Elston, and County Clerk of the District Court Sheila Lueders.

Candidates in several nonpartisan races will also automatically advance to the general election in November, including Seward Mayor Joshua Eickmeier and the four Seward City Council incumbents, Megan Kahler, Ward 1, Tatum Tonniges, Ward 2, Rich Wergin, Ward 3, and Karl Miller, Ward 4.

Other candidates automatically advancing to the November ballot are Erich Helge and Marvin Siefert, Seward Airport Authority; Kylie Schildt, Milford City Council; Jason Richters, Derek Tomes, and Lana Hoffschneider, Centennial School Board; Dave Welsch, David Dickinson, Brandon Wergin and Colten Roth, Milford School Board; and Jill Hochstein, Danielle Shipley, Matt Hastings and Rebecca Hasty, Seward School Board.

Several village boards will have candidates on the November ballot, also.
