With the Seward County Fair coming up, the Seward County Ag Society and Summit Contracting are still working on getting the new small animal barn finished before the fair starts. The barn will house rabbits and poultry during the fair.
Devin Koranda, one of the small animal barn superintendents, said crews have been working on the barn since sometime around November or December of 2025 and the project is still moving along well.
“The old building was torn down,” Koranda said.
Koranda said that when the new building is finished, it will be taller than the old, and it will overall just be bigger.
“It’s going to be an extra four feet taller,” Koranda said. “So we’ll have bigger doors, but the old one already had posts to support the roof, so this will just be an open floor plan.”
The cages in the barn will be set up to look and be like the state fair. Koranda said the extra space for the cages will be good, considering the Seward County Fair is one of the larger small animal shows.
“Our numbers have been pretty big,” Koranda said. “We have over 400 head in here a year.”
Koranda said the ag society knew it was time to upgrade the barn as it started to get rotten and they started to have electrical problems.
“We’ve had some leaks, and with the ducks and geese sitting on there, they got pretty wet,” Koranda said. “We also had some pretty significant electrical problems in the old one. That’s also kind of why we did the new tractor barn. We needed more storage.”
Although the barn isn’t finished yet, Koranda said he hopes it will be finished by the time the Seward County Fair roles around.
“One way or another, we will make it work,” Koranda said.
Overall, Koranda said the ag society is excited for the building to be done and for more upgrades in the future.
“It’s time to update,” Koranda said. “We’ve updated quite a few of our buildings, but some still need some work and we hav
