Seward wins first, falls in semifinals

The Seward baseball team needed an extra inning May 6 for a district victory. The Jays held off Ralston 5-4 in eight innings but then couldn’t keep the momentum against Platte Valley, falling 12-2.

SHS opened against Ralston with a run in the first inning, which the Rams answered in the second. The teams exchanged runs in the fourth and sixth innings and finished seven tied 2-2.

Seward catcher Cameron Olson hit a bases clearing three-run double in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the inning, the Rams led off with a double, a fly out, a walk and a single to load the bases. A double drove in two runs to make the score 5-4, then a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with two outs.

Another walk loaded the bases before Isaac Spotanski induced a pop fly to shortstop Finn Hochstein to end the game.

Olson was 2-5 with three RBIs to lead the Jays. Hochstein pitched the first seven innings, with Spotanski coming on in relief.

The win put Seward in a semifinal against Platte Valley, and the Patriots shut down the Jays after the first inning, allowing just three hits. Ryley Hain drove in both runs.

Seward finishes the season with a 6-17 record and will graduate four seniors – Spotanski, Trevor Ruth, Matt Flyr and Parker Hammond.
