Three races to be on upcoming primary election ballot

With just a couple days until the deadline, Seward County now has three races that will appear on the primary ballot May 12.

The deadline for incumbents to file for re-election has passed and non-incumbents had until 5 p.m. March 2 to file candidacy papers at the Seward County Clerk’s office.

As of Feb. 27, Jonathan Curtis of Seward had filed to be the Republican candidate challenging incumbent Ken Schmieding for the Seward County Board of Commissioners District 5 seat.

The District 3 seat on the county board also will be on the primary ballot, with Tyler Dickinson, Kaely Eberspacher and Jon Propst seeking the Republican nomination for the seat being vacated by Raegan Hain.

Earlier, three candidates had filed for the Republican nomination for Seward County Sheriff: Tim Huntington, Troy Schaefer and Trey Wayne.

As of Feb. 27, only Republicans had filed candidacy papers for the Seward County offices. Non-county positions on the local ballot are non-partisan.

New additions to the candidates list are Rebecca Hasty, who joins a three-seat Seward School Board race for which three incumbents also filed, and Kylie Schildt of Milford, who is running for Milford City Council. Milford City Council incumbent Waylon “Tony” DeLong had not filed for re-election as of Feb. 27.

The Nebraska Secretary of State’s election website lists the state offices up for election this year, and as of Feb. 27, District 24 Sen. Jana Hughes of Seward has no challenger.

Two of the three people seeking the District 5 seat on the Nebraska State Board of Education are from Seward County. That nonpartisan primary race will include Michaela Conway of Crete, Angie Eberspacher of Beaver Crossing and Lana Daws of Seward.

Villages, educational service units and public power districts grossing annual revenues of less than $40 million, have until June 15 to certify their vacant positions to the county clerk for inclusion in the fall general election.

Village board incumbents have until the general election deadline on July 15 to file for candidacy and so far only Debra Frank of Staplehurst has filed papers. Nonincumbents have until Aug. 3 to file papers.
