Two sheriff candidates off primary ballot

Due to filing oversights, Troy Schaefer and Trey Wayne will no longer be on the Republican primary ballot running for Seward County sheriff.

Both are redirecting their campaigns to be write-in candidates for sheriff on the general ballot in November.

But with Tim Huntington being the only Republican candidate on the ballot at this time, there is no need for the sheriff’s office to appear on primary ballots. His name will advance as the only Republican name on the general election ballot in November.

No Democrats or other candidates have filed to run for sheriff.

Schaefer and Wayne both missed the March 1 deadline to file Form C-1 Statement of Financial Interests, which all candidates are required to submit. The state offers candidates a five-day grace period for filing, which this year extended to March 9.

Schaefer said he missed the deadline because he thought county offices did not require the C-1 form.

“I went back and found it on page 21. I thought it was for state offices,” Schaefer said, noting the secretary of state’s website.

“It will make my campaign a little harder,” he said, but he will redirect the emphasis to ask voters to write in his name.

Wayne also said this was an oversight.

“The form was missed,” he said.

His campaign will continue.

“The big thing is a need to include how to do the write-in,” he said, which requires voters to both fill in the oval for the write-in line and enter their candidate’s name.

The deadline for filing as a write-in candidate for the fall ballot is Oct. 23. Write-in candidates also have to file, pay candidate fees and submit other documentation.

The Seward County Republican Party has cancelled an April 9 candidate debate it had scheduled for Huntington, Schaefer and Wayne.
