Trey Wayne, one of two Seward County residents running as write-in candidates against the Republican nominee for Seward County Sheriff, has halted his campaign.
Wayne said on July 16 that he would not officially withdraw as a write-in candidate, but is not actively campaigning due to back surgery in April and other factors.
“It was not going to work out to run this time,” Wayne said. “But I am planning definitely to run in the future.”
Wayne originally filed as a Republican candidate for the sheriff’s race, but missed a deadline for a financial report and instead registered as a write-in candidate. Only write-in votes for individuals registered with the Seward County election commissioners office can be counted in the November election.
Leaving his write-in status active means votes for him could still be counted.
“If enough people still write me in, I will still do it,” he said.
Republican Tim Huntington is the only candidate whose name will appear on the ballot, but Troy Schaefer has also registered as a write-in candidate after also missing the financial report deadline.
Wayne said he has talked to both men about the campaign.
“I have not decided if I am going to endorse one or the other at this time,” Wayne said.
