Nan McCoy of Seward was voted by the Rotary Club membership to receive annual Wayne Tanderup Award by the Seward Rotary Club at the Seward Rotary Club’s Service Above Self Banquet Saturday, June 1, at Harvest Hall.

No trolls under this bridge

Seward resident Charles Ore and several of his friends are concerned about the state of Plum Creek Bridge, located on Bluff Road. He said the bridge has noticeably deteriorated and has looked dangerous for at least the past five years.
City Engineer Mike Oneby said the bridge, which is 57 years old, will be completely redone within the next few years.

TODAY - Initiative subject of info meetings

Seward Area Lutherans for Life Chapter will present two informational meetings about the new Protect Women & Children pro-life ballot initiative at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. The public is invited to come hear Sen. Jana Hughes and others discuss what we need to know about the abortion ballot initiatives in Nebraska on Wednesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. in the St. John Fellowship Hall, and Wednesday, June 5, at 2 p.m. in the St. John Sanctuary.

TODAY - More space adventures at SML

Attention all cosmic explorers! Prepare for an out-of-this-world adventure at the Seward Memorial Library. Play bingo with space-themed squares. Each round brings new excitement and discovery, marking off squares as we encounter fascinating space phenomena. This event begins at 1 p.m. and is geared towards K-5th grades. This free program requires no registration.

TODAY - Kick off July 4

The annual Seward Fourth of July Celebration Kick-Off Party will be Wednesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. at the Nebraska National Guard Museum. There will be the announcement and crowning of Miss Independence and Mr. Firecracker and other award announcements. The event is free, open to the public and will offer free hotdogs and cake. TODAY - Picnic at the farmers market

The Seward Farmers Market will be the site of a picnic in the park tonight from 5-7 p.m. The Firecracker Dance Group is hosting the hamburger stand. The market is east of the horseshoe pits at the Seward County Fairgrounds.

TOMORROW - Build (straw) rockets at SML

Join us at the Seward Memorial Library for an hour-long workshop where you’ll get the chance to build straw rockets with library supplies and a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory kit. This event begins at 1 p.m. and is geared towards K-5th grades. No registration necessary, just stop by during this free program. 

FRIDAY - Last day for scavenger hunt

Embark on an enchanting adventure through the winding paths of Seward’s parks to discover what literary character is reading amidst the lush greenery and scenic landscapes through May 31. For all ages who dare to join in, pick up a Parks Scavenger Hunt sheet at the Seward Memorial Library. To complete this quest, go to the listed parks and uncover clues scattered around the parks. Bring your completed sheet back to the Seward Memorial Library to enter a prize drawing. 

SATURDAY - Rotary Gala honors service

The annual Seward Rotary Club’s Celebration of Service dinner/gala will be Saturday, June 1, at 5:30 p.m. at Harvest Hall on the Seward County Fairgrounds. The event celebrates the 99th anniversary of the Seward Rotary Club, presents the club's annual awards and features a cash bar, live music, a dinner by Rue 6 and a silent auction. Malcolm sweeps home opener

Malcolm baseball hosted Sampson Construction in a junior/senior doubleheader May 28 and won both games. The seniors shut out their guests 10-0, thanks to a huge night from Mason Wisnieski. The Malcolm third baseman was 3-3 with three home runs and drove in six. The juniors held on for 7-6 victory behind a 3-3 night by Chase Smith.

Tecumseh shuts out Milford

The Milford Legion Post 171 juniors couldn't get their offense going against Tecumseh last night, falling 13-0. Gabe Mach had Milford's only hit of the game.
