Eagles top Rockets, Scouts in duals

Beat David City in a dual. It’s been on Milford wrestling’s to-do list for a long time. Now, it’s checked off.

The Eagles hosted David City and Syracuse in a triangular Dec. 21 and beat the Rockets 38-33 and the Scouts 38-34.

The dual with David City was the third of the night and came down to the final match. The Scouts took a 34-32 team lead with a pin at 190 pounds. MHS senior Kasen Petsch took the mat for a match “he’ll remember for the rest of his life,” Coach Joe Schluckebier said.

After a scramble to open the match against Adam Carrasco, Petsch put the DC 215-pounder on his back and scored the pin at the end of the first period. When the referee’s hand hit the mat, pandemonium ensued.

“It was pretty fun. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears in this. You live for moments like these,” Schluckebier said.

“It’s always unlikely heroes. That was a great moment for him and the program. We had never beat David City in a dual – it’s good to finally get over the hump.”

Petsch wasn’t the only Eagle to win a match against the Scouts. Cooper Rea, Conner Kohout, Sean Stanton and Hunter Dickinson also recorded wins. Garrett Schoen and Quinn Zegers won their matches by forfeit.

Even in the losses, Schluckebier said, the Eagles did what they needed to do. For example, Kellen Lovitt, Cory Langenberg and Boen Schweitzer did not give up pins.

“We had drawn it up 10 different ways,” Schluckebier said with a laugh. “We knew 215 would be pivotal.”

The dual with Syracuse was about as tough, he said. Milford won seven of the contested matches, six of them by pin.

“We were in trouble a little bit early,” Schluckebier said. “We have in our line-up five to six guys who know how to get the job done. But there are 14 weight classes.”

With the two wins, the Eagles improved to 6-0 in duals this season. After the moratorium, which is Dec. 23-27, the Eagles will come back to action Friday, Jan. 5, at Wilber-Clatonia for a dual tournament.
