Girls fourth, medal five at Centennial Invite

After two weeks off because of weather cancellations and postponements, the Seward County girls’ wrestling team was back on the mat for competition Jan. 20.

The team finished fourth at the Centennial Invitational and brought home five medals.

“We were a little rusty,” Coach Doug Theobald said. “Some were not up to their standards.”

Ava Rediger led the team with a runner-up finish at 125 pounds. She was 3-1 on the day with three pins.

“That’s the best I have seen her wrestle this year,” Theobald said. “Things are really clicking.”

Earning third places were Lauren Frihauf (105), Lainey Abell (190) and Sarah Payne (235). Mia Cobian (120) finished fourth.

Theobald said all the medalists had good weekends. He was pleased to see how well Abell and Payne wrestled at the upper weights, which require a little different technique than the lower weights do, he said.

“As a team we’ve done some really good things,” Theobald said.

The next competition is the Central Conference tournament Friday, Jan. 26, at York. Matches start at 3 p.m. Theobald said Crete, Lexington and York have tough competition, and he’s looking forward to seeing how Seward does against that.
