The Seward County girls’ wrestling team sent its first qualifiers to the state wrestling tournament Feb. 15-17 and brought home the first match win at state.

Ava Rediger pinned Ariana Blume of Valentine in the first round of consolation matches Feb. 16.

“That felt good,” Coach Doug Theobald said.

Rediger, wrestling at 125 pounds, was 1-2 in the tournament and finished the season at 37-16. Lauren Frihauf competed at 105 pounds and went 0-2. Her final record was 36-16. Evelyn Theobald at 130 pounds was also 0-2 and finished the year at 28-23.

Overall, Coach Theobald said, it was a good experience for the three.

“The first round we got the nerves out of the way,” he said. “All wrestled hard on Friday.”

He said they saw the best of the best and hung with them.

“Now we need to figure out what gets us over the hump and to the next level,” Coach Theobald said.

All three wrestlers are sophomores and will return next season.
