Larry Gene Schildt of Pleasant Dale was born Oct. 20, 1939, in rural Pleasant Dale, to August Jr. and Ida (Schultz) Schildt.

He was baptized, confirmed and a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church (Middle Creek) in Seward. He attended Malcolm High School, graduating in 1957. He served his country in the National Guard. On May 4, 1963, he was united in marriage to Carol Ann Viets at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pleasant Dale. He was a loving father to their children, Michael, Rodney, Angela and James. Larry’s family lived in the Pleasant Dale area for more than 140 years when his grandfather immigrated to Nebraska. The family moved to the current Schildt farm and dairy one mile north of the homestead in 1965 as part of the Twin Lakes Project.

Along with his father and brother, Leslie, they owned and operated Schildt and Sons custom shelling and trucking business. In 1980, the Larry Schildt farm was awarded the Pioneer Farm Family Award and in 2005, they were awarded the “Outstanding Farm Family of the Year.” They received numerous Quality Milk Awards during their 60 years in the dairy business. Larry passed away Jan. 17, 2024, in Seward, at the age of 84.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Schildt; their children, Michael Schildt, Rod (Kathi) Schildt and Angie (Keith) Burkhardt, all of Pleasant Dale; daughter-in-law, Brooke Schildt of Omaha; grandchildren, Kara (Joe) Lacey, Kylie Schildt (JR Douty), Meghan (Brogan) Casey, Cody (Haley) Burkhardt, Taylor Schildt, Marty (Jacquelyn) Schildt, Cassidy Burkhardt (fiancé, Connor Gutierrez), Phillip Schildt, Sydney Schildt, Ashlyn Schildt, Cale Burkhardt and Myranda Schildt; great-grandchildren, Hayden Lacey, Kit and Roy Douty, and Griffyn and Dutton Burkhardt; sister, Wilma Mook; sister-in-law, Joan Schildt; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, August and Ida Schildt; son, James Schildt; and brothers, Leslie Schildt and Lawrence Schildt.

Visitation is Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 2 – 8 p.m. At Volzke Funeral Home with a gathering of family and friends from 6:30 – 8 p.m. The funeral service is Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church – Middle Creek in rural Seward with committal in the church cemetery.
