Milford girls miss victories

The Milford girls’ basketball team is looking to get back in the win column after a short three-game skid heading into Christmas break.

“I think Ashland-Greenwood spilled into the next couple days,” Coach Bryce Roth said.

After the loss to AGHS Dec. 16, the MHS girls fell short to North Bend Central 56-53 Dec. 19 and to Aurora 59-51 Dec. 21.

Roth said the Eagles didn’t defend well against NBC, allowing Lindsey Emanuel and Lauren Sterup too many looks.

“We did a great job excuting on offense, but they had a hot night from three,” Roth said

In addition, the Tigers forced 13 Milford turnovers, while committing just one themselves.

Roth was pleased to see the Eagles outrebound NBC 33-20, with 11 of those offensive for MHS.

“We still had opportunities. We had a shot at the end to tie,” he said.

Ayla Roth led the Eagles with 25 points, and Izzy Yeackley scored 20. They were balanced by Emanuel with 23 and Sterup with 22, however.

Two days later, the Eagles were back on the court at Aurora, a new team for MHS to play.

“We felt good about our prep,” Coach Roth said. “We got out to a decent start, but rebounds were the theme of the game. We were atrocious on the boards.”

Milford finished with 25 rebounds, while Aurora had 36.

MHS led 12-8 after the first quarter, but the Huskies outscored the Eagles 17-12 in the second for a one-point halftime lead and pulled away in the second half.

“We didn’t look sharp,” Coach Roth said.

Aurora finished with 18 points off 19 Milford turnovers. Roth said the Eagles didn’t always handle the press well.

Ayla Roth and Yeackley led the team in scoring again with 18 and 12, respectively. Roth added eight assists.

“We let the game get away,” the coach said.

The Eagles (5-3) will be back in action at the Lincoln Christian holiday tournament starting Friday, Dec. 29. MHS will play Nebraska Christian at noon. LCHS and Gering are the other two teams.
