For the second year, the Milford Senior Center will host a gift wrapping fundraising service for the community.
On Saturday, Dec. 7, from 3:30 – 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 2 – 6 p.m., the center will be open for community members to bring in gifts. Gifts will be wrapped, stored, then returned to their respective owner just in time for Santa to jump in and take credit.
Last year, the center had a group of about a dozen or so volunteers and is expecting a similar turnout this year. Anybody interested in volunteering is encouraged to attend during the hours listed and help out in the holiday wrapping fun.
“Most of the Senior Center participants are all about serving others,” said volunteer and project coordinator Katy Pauley.
The service is offered through free-will donations. The supplies used, such as wrapping paper and tape, were purchased with funds received through a Thrivent Action Team Grant the center received last year. All donations gathered during the fundraiser will go to the different activities and entertainment offered by the center year round.
Every weekday, the center serves meals that allow for senior citizens to get together and interact. And aside from the daily meals, the center also hosts a fundraising dinner 10 out of 12 months throughout the year. From January through October a potato bake is hosted on the second Wednesday of the month.
The gift wrapping fundraiser is held in December so that even if no potato bake is being held, the center is still giving back to the community.
“It is something to support, especially some of our seniors in the center and in the community, who do not have the opportunity to wrap a present, due to arthritis or other factors. This gives them the opportunity to watch it happen,” said Mystii Lauer, director of the Center. “We can also store the presents here at the center. This gives an opportunity for the young parents who do not have time to wrap and hide presents.”
Last year, volunteers wrapped up weed eaters, stuffed dolls, footballs and basketballs. Presents of any size and shape are welcomed. The volunteers have got it covered. They can wrap up the holidays for you.
