Blue Mound Cemetery in Milford is expanding its offerings with the addition of a new columbarium, thanks to an unexpected donation from a former area resident.
The columbarium was set to be delivered and installed on Feb. 27.
Janet and Eldon Moorberg, a couple with ties to the Milford and Seward communities, left an annuity to the cemetery, which ultimately resulted in a $227,489.86 donation. The gift came as a surprise to the cemetery board, which then worked with local funeral director Doug Wymore of Lauber Funeral Home and Cremation Services to determine the best use of the funds.
“Doug reported to us that there has been an increase in interest in cremation so yes, that's kind of why we went this route .” said Jeanne Hoggins, Milford City Clerk and Treasurer.
Wymore suggested the columbarium because cremation is becoming much more popular. Rather than purchasing more land, the structure provides 256 niches for cremated remains, ensuring efficient use of space while meeting community needs.
“I just presented different ideas to the cemetery board since I am an advisor to the board,” Wymore said. “Everyone ended up deciding on this.”
Proceeds from niche sales will go toward further cemetery improvements, including a new directory to help visitors locate loved ones and for pouring concrete and addition of benches and a table in front of the newly installed columbarium.
Niche prices range from $1,000 to $1,800. The size of all niches are 12 inches high, 11 inches deep and 11 inches wide. The columbarium is made of solid Mahogany Granite that was quarried in Milbank, South Dakota.
A dedication ceremony honoring the Moorbergs is expected at a later date and community members will have the opportunity to purchase niches and hold ceremonies in front of the new addition.
