The Milford cross country teams were  both runner-up at the Southern Nebraska Conference meet Oct. 9, finishing behind Tri County. The Eagles had eight runners finish in the top 15.

“We had a successful day at the SNC meet,” Milford Coach Jake Kment said.

The girls finished third last season and, although the boys were the defending champions, Kment knew the competition was more difficult this season.

The conference used Class D scoring, which is only the top three runners instead of the top four, which is how Class C is scored.

“Our goal going into the meet was to bring home two runner-up plaques, and the kids took care of business,” Kment said. “Tri County is one of the best teams in Class D on both the girls and boys side, and they ran well Thursday.”

Avery Carter won his third conference title, finishing in 17:26.9.

“He was strong and confident the entire race, and was in control the entire time,” Kment said.

Milford’s other medalists were Sylus Rakow in eighth, Jonny Kohout in 13th and Aiden Verwey in 15th.

“We knew we were going to be challenged by Wilber-Clatonia for second place,” Kment said. “We knew we would need to break up some of their packs in order to outscore them. The boys ended up running well and accomplishing that.”

Macie Carter paced the Milford girls’ team with a runner-up finish in 20:41.1. Abby Crabtree was seventh, Elsa Schweitzer eighth and Olivia Augustyn 12th.

The Eagles will run in a district meet this week. Milford will run Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Branched Oak Lake starting at 4 p.m.
