Seward/Milford girls win two duals at Flatwater

The Seward girls’ wrestling team picked up two dual wins at the Flatwater Fracas Dec. 19 and 20 in Grand Island. Seward beat Lincoln Northeast in a tiebreaker and defeated Grand Island JV.

Coach Andy Sistek said the team’s original wrestlers – Lauren Frihauf, Ava Rediger, Kate Jones and Evelyn Theobald – continue to have good senior seasons.

Frihauf went 7-0 for the tournament, accepting three forfeits and pinning four opponents at 105 pounds. Rediger was 5-2 at 135 pounds, picking up three pins. Jones added a 4-3 day at 130 pounds.

Sistek said the younger wrestlers are starting to see success despite limited time on the mat. Some have only wrestled for a month, he said.

“That’s a good sign for the future,” he said. “But it’s hard when you don’t have all your veterans.”

He was pleased to see the wrestlers continue to fight and scrap on the mat, getting better with each match.

The girls’ team competed in a dual tournament at Weeping Water Dec. 22 and were to host a dual Dec. 23 to close the pre-Christmas schedule. Seward is next in action Friday, Jan. 2 at Fillmore Central.
